Data is our currency. Using a Software as a service (SaaS) business model with a financial web service, Munetrix has been able to use paying customers to conceptualize, build, test and expand its product to nearly 300 local government customers in three states. Originally designed as a Freemium platform using an Open Data concept, Munetrix has slowly turned off the free access spigot only to find (as it had predicted) that those who grew used to having access to the data are now requesting it and are willing to pay. Traditional licenses are still being sold to local governments, but the real value is truly in the information the data generates. The original plan was to go slow, perfect the inaugural market, test it in two other states, and then scale. The company is now ready to begin the scaling process.
