Developed a method of creating three-dimensional tumor “spheroids” in standard plates used for high-throughput drug screening. Their initial hypothesis is that a startup based on this technology would offer the service of screening compounds of interest as cancer therapeutics, following the use of standard mono cell layers to screen drugs but before costly and time consuming animal tests. These 3D tumor models would screen out compounds that made it through the initial tests but would have failed in animal models, because the 3D tumors more closely mimic actual tumors
